TOPIC: Risk Management in Mega Projects

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is executing the $12.8 Billion Darlington Refurbishment Program (DRP) to refurbish and extend the life of the four Darlington Nuclear Station Generating units by an additional 30 years.

 

Learn how OPG has applied Risk Management processes to 1) plan the refurbishment, and 2) monitor and control risks during execution and, 3) report on contingency usage.

 

The Risk Management program has evolved during the planning and execution phase of Darlington Refurbishment Program. During the planning stage, an in-house customized risk management tool was developed and implemented. Further to support project approval and funding release, a fully integrated cost and schedule contingency model was developed with successful results. As the execution phases started, the “Risk Management in Motion” active risk management model was launched and implemented. As of today, risk management group has been gaining incremental supports and endorsement from various project management and senior management teams and effectively managing a number of key project risks.

 

Ms. Lisa Ren is Manager of Risk Management, Nuclear Project Management Office at Ontario Power Generation. She holds an MSc. In Project Management and her PMP (2004). Ms. Ren holds 20 years of experience in project controls and project management and has managed multiple mega projects in Utilities and Energy in Canada and China.

Data Analytics can support Project Controls and Project Management teams in providing better insight in to current status of project performance, providing support for better forecasting of cost and time and efficient monitoring and control of risks.
